Nine Premiership bowlers were grouped into 3
groups, such that they played 2 games against opposition and 1 game
against a BYE. Group A Luke, George and
Callam, Group B Emma, Sophie H and Adam, and Group C, Mark, Jake and
Dean.
Luke took group A with a 551 series and three
wins, Callam taking highest loser overall. Emma took group B with a
539 series and 3 wins, Mark winning group C starting with a 248 game
and a 601 series and 3 wins.
The stepladder was to turn out to be a remarkable
event. Emma couldn't miss in practice, Callam found the gutter
more than the lane, we should have known what was to come. Callam,
highest loser opened his account with a stormer a 264 game. Next up
Luke who had beaten Callam in the qualifying, started off with 3
opens and Callam was away. By the 8th and after some huge 5 pin
splits from Callam it looked to be game on, Luke opened twice and
Callam struck out to win easily in the end.
The final, and on came Mark. Callam blasted his
way into a commanding lead by frame 6, Mark had three opens and two
spares, both then doubled, and then Mark just kept going. 10th Frame Callam needed to strike out to ensure winning, he spared and struck,
Mark doubled and that put it all on the last ball, Mark had not had
his nose in front all through the game, he needed 7 to win and got
9. An amazing comeback and poor Callam, he bowls a 674 final 3 and
ends up being pipped by 205 to 203.

The Divisional Handicapped event saw some good
qualifying, first game of 199 scratch (250 with H'cap) saw Alice
storm to the front, although several other 200+ H'cap scores on
game 1, not the least a 242 from Connor. Game two saw a cracking
240 with H'cap from Jason Reed, notably Sam Martin put in a 228
after a first game 229, putting him marginally in the lead
overall. Game 3 and Anthony Nixon stormed through with a 256
H'cap game to finish in 4th on a 658, edging out Alice to 5th on
a 636. Shaun Eccleston had been keeping up a good 210+ game
score throughout and sneaked in 1 pin above Anthony in to 3rd.
Jason Reed ended on a 229 to take second with 672 and Sam Martin
improved on his last game to finish with a 235 and 692 overall (a
very creditable 515 scratch). The
Stepladder saw Anthony start slow and Shaun quickly and a
valiant late game revival from Anthony wasn't enough. This was
the first experience of a stepladder final for Jason and he
struggled to gain the consistency he had been showing all
through the qualifying games, Shaun continuing from the first
round and into the final. Sam Martin also started slowly
but then found his mark with a turkey, Shaun was not to be put
off though and kept nailing his spares and staying ahead, close
still at the 8th, Shaun powered through the 9th and 10th frame
to a first Internal tournament victory. |
