1.0           Record.

The previous minutes were agreed as a true record but Jeff Calvert raised an objection to implications of Paragraph 5, the YAC report.  He felt this item suggested that all the problem with the YACs was management which was not the case. It was a two way problem caused in part by the lack of commitment of YAC members and he wished this to be put on record.

2.0           Matters Arising

MG ran through the answers that had been received from BTBA Head Office in reply to his email dated 4th May as a result of questions raised at the previous meeting.

Briefly, - persons elected to the National Council become a Director of the Association and represent all members nationally.

-the Go Ten Pin Magazine although not owned or run by the BTBA is the vehicle of the association used to communicate with its members.

              - there is no secrecy at National Council meetings but it must be realised that often matters have to be discussed that if made public could lead to litigation.

- details of BTBA insurance scheme were on display

- rule books were issued to all new members and others could purchase if

                              required for £1.00.

The reply letter referring to the above from Bernice Bass of BTBA head office was on display for all to read.

3.0           Appointments.

MG confirmed that the Executive had appointed Chris and Phil Aldersley as the new Lancs Adult team managers and Paul Wild as the YAC manager to replace Fred Miller.  Jeff Calvert confirmed that he was stepping down as joint YAC manager. The meeting raised no objection to these appointments.  Paul Wild had applied for his police clearance but as a fireman he already held this document in a different format

4.0           League Sanctioning

MG stressed the need to get more leagues in the county sanctioned. The meeting agreed that non sanctioned leagues were using the structure and rules of the BTBA without contributing.  After a debate the meeting agreed that if members of the BTBA were requested for assistance by a non-sanctioned league this should unfortunately be refused otherwise there would be no point in membership.

MG pointed out that it was a disgrace that the adults and seniors in this county through membership subscriptions were being supported mostly by its juniors as these were the majority of the sanctioned leagues with the exception of Morecambe Bowl.  The only income for the county other than fund raising came back from Head office as a result of how many members we had.

It was requested and agreed that everybody present would try to promote membership and the need to sanction any leagues they bowled in to ensure the future progress of Tenpin bowling as a nationally organised SPORT.  This would be in line with other counties in which the majority of leagues were sanctioned.

The meeting was informed that as a result of the management support of the BTBA in the past, which had been continued with the present management, virtually all leagues at Morecambe were sanctioned.  This should be taken as an example of the way forward.

Members present who were attending the AGM of the North West fives the following day agreed to bring up the matter of sanctioning this competition.

It was suggested that bowling centres might be willing to give monetary concessions to sanctioned leagues.  The executive agreed to look into this and report back to the members.

5.00 Communication

MG confirmed that it was getting better but asked that the people involved in running different sections of the Lancashire BTBA teams responded more quickly because a two or three week delay in some instances could have caused serious difficulties for the county.

It was suggested and agreed that there should be BTBA reps for each bowl. Both the membership and the management for communication purposes could contact these people, i.e. to put notices on the board, to discuss issues on behalf of the Lancs BTBA with the centre management and provide feed back from their bowl to the Lancs executive.  The following people kindly volunteered: -

Morecambe                         Bev Weisenburger

Preston                                Barbara Glover

White City Manchester       Rachel Jennings (nee Aldersley)

Stockport                             Carl Dulson

Wigan                                  Goeff Rens

Worsley                               Jackie Batty

Edge Lane Liverpool           Any of the Little family

Burnley                                    TBC.

Preston Megabowl                TBC

If any body has difficulty in contacting any of the above please get in touch with Mike Glover on 01772 335879 or 07976 264268.

A suggestion was put forward and agreed for photographs to be taken and placed on BTBA notice boards and the web page of different members of the Lancashire organisation to assist in knowing whose who.

6.00 New Tournaments.

MG pointed out that the BTBA Nationally required each area executive to organise an annual Area Championship to be held in May.  This practice over the past few years seems to have fallen by the wayside.  The meeting was strongly in agreement for renewing this tournament and using the Wilkinson sword as the main trophy.  In principal the meeting agreed that it would be best that it was held in May but members expressed concern that it may clash with some of the numerous tournaments held in May of each year.   MG agreed to contact BTBA head office to discuss.

Volunteers would be necessary but Bryan Wiggans agreed to look after the scoring of this tournament.  MG had obtained details of how other counties ran their tournament.

Morecambe were to be congratulated for organising their second sanctioned tournament this year, which Bev W confirmed, was getting good responses.

Jim Missen and the Lancs junior organisers continue to run their 4 annual sanctioned junior tournaments, which have been well supported so far.

RJ suggested holding a Triplex tournament across the county.  More information on how it would work was necessary but the meeting thought this was a very good idea.

Anybody could take part but non-BTBA members paid an extra levy. Rachel to advise further on this idea.

Bev W reminded the meeting that it was the turn of Lancashire to host the next Scott Banks tournament involving six-person teams, one from each age group.

Pete Singleton, Chris and Phil Aldersley volunteered to organise this.  Bev W agreed to provide contact details and information obtained from when they ran this tournament

CD asked why there appeared to be no Team England events in the north of England especially on the West Side of the Pennines.  The response was that from past experience the southerners were reluctant to come this far north and the northeners don’t support such events very well.  CD did not agree with these reasons.

MG agreed to raise it at the forthcoming area secretaries meeting in Leicester.

7.0       2003 Trials date & management.

The time of year for holding the trials was discussed especially because of the problem previously encountered with the YAC’s. Suggestions were put forward to hold the YAC trials separately, also to split up the trials for the different sections.  After debate this was thought to be impractical because of the number of weekends involved, the man management of all the different trials, different conditions plus the cross over of some bowlers from one group to another.  It was eventually agreed to continue with the existing format.  MH pointed out that this system was introduced some years ago to help different age groups to get to know each other and provide more team spirit within the county.

It was agreed that a committee be set up to run the next trials, they were to look at these issues and address the problems encountered last year and to put forward their proposals at the next two quarterly meetings.  Mal Holmes and Geoff Rens kindly volunteered, as did Bryan Wiggans who would do the scoring.

It was requested that the trial forms included more clarification of the selection criteria for the team from the qualifying squad, although it was strongly expressed by all that the squad was the team and that different members may be selected for different events.

8.0        More Helpers.

MG on behalf of the executive expressed his gratitude for such a large number of people attending the meeting.  This is what the area executive was also hoping to achieve with more helpers.  In the past certain individuals had tried to do it all themselves until it got too much and they stopped doing it and we lost their services and as a consequence their knowledge and experience, namely Jim Missen and Fred Miller and probably others before them. What was envisaged was more people doing smaller things to help.

With the instigation of bowling centre representatives this was hopefully now going to start taking place.

To help get the word out more and promote and let the members know what the area BTBA are doing, Bryan W suggested the appointment of a Public Relations officer and after some discussion agreed to take on this role.  He would act as a conduit or focal point for information to be fed to and from bowling centres and the local BTBA

9.0      Fund Raising

Whilst finances were starting to get a little better MG still stressed the desperate need to do more fund raising to allow the county to fulfil the aspirations of all members especially when representing the county.

A number of initiatives have been started, they are as follows: -

Carol and John Barter have organised and purchased a supply of pens with Lancs BTBA printed on.  Anybody willing to try and sell them at 50p each at any events or offices please contact Carol / John or any member of the executive.

Barbara Glover has obtained metal Lancashire badges selling for £1.00 each.  As above anybody wanting to try and sell them on behalf of the Lancs BTBA please contact Barbara.

Bev Weisenburger is selling Lancashire embroidered shirts to any eligible squad member for £18.00

Pat Clift is running a word search competition at the moment, which is selling for £1.00 a sheet.

BG confirmed that a bag packing day was being organised by the juniors probably at Blackpool Asda because Preston Asda could not fit one in until December.

Laurie Wilson was reported to be making progress for the south Lancs YBC’s bag packing at Morrisons in Bolton.

MG and Bryan W requested that all the above fund raisers keep proper records of their sales and purchases with invoices etc and submit to the treasurer on a regular basis.

RG understood that money might be available from the North West Sports foundation for small projects especially coaching.  He agreed to look into this.

BG confirmed that she was investigating funding from the Lottery for training seminars to help the junior instructors who had all expressed an interest if this could be arranged.  This she believed had already been carried out for the Lincolnshire and Derbyshire junior instructors and had proved very successful.

MG stated that as noted in the previous meeting he had not as yet approached Lancashire County Councils Sports Council to see if any grants were available.

9.0      Shirts

BG expressed concern that she had to beg and borrow county shirts for the junior tournament tomorrow at Liverpool.  Bev W confirmed that they had been ordered as soon as the quantity was known but there had not been enough time.     Discussions took place as to how this annual problem could be overcome but no solution was found. All parties would have to be aware of the urgency of getting their order in as quickly as possible.  Bev W did acknowledge that there had been extra difficulty this year because of the team manager changes with adults and YAC’s.

It was agreed to have the AMF logo removed from all future shirts but a suggestion was made that a final approach be made to AMF to see if sponsorship was still available. A number of people at the meeting felt that £18 was expensive and stated that they would obtain costs from alternative sources as a comparison.  Bev W stressed that the quality they got from the existing supplier was very good.

10.0      Junior Report

PS & BG reported that they had carried out training sessions at Preston and Morecambe which had been well supported by juniors and instructors.

11.0       YAC report.

Apologies had been received from Paul Wild who could not attend due to work commitments.  However MG stated that he did believe Paul was going to try and set up a weekly competition for YAC members.  Paul will be providing more details shortly.

12.0    Adult report.

As a result of their recent appointment Phil and Chris Aldersley had been working very hard to meet the date for submission of their squad.  This they confirmed they would achieve.  They stated that they did intend to hold a get together/training session as soon as possible. The meeting confirmed that any age group was eligible to represent the adult section.

13.0        Senior report.

MG and PC confirmed that they had held a get together at Preston and a team of ladies and men had attended their first round tournament at Lincoln.  The men ended up 3rd but with a lot of catching up to do to get to 2nd place and qualify for the finals, the ladies were similar but in fourth place.  The next round is to be held at the end of July in Burton.

A complaint was reported that a senior bowler from Morecambe who had qualified for the team had not been contacted and did not know any details of the tournament.

MG & PC did not believe this was correct.  The person involved had been invited by telephone to the training session but had been unable to attend.  MG confirmed making up an information pack for him and requesting that fellow Morecambe bowlers pass it on to him.  This pack apparently did not get to him but PC confirmed having a conversation with him the day before the event when he stated that he would not be able to attend because of transport problems.

MH pointed out that this could be a lesson to all in that they cannot expect the managers to do everything for the teams. The team members have an obligation to contact the managers to find out, if they have not been contacted for whatever reason.

14.0      Any other business.

MG stated that he was attending the annual area secretaries meeting in Leicester, run by the BTBA and asked the meeting if there were any points that they would like to be raised. The following issues were requested:-

Firstly- the quality of the Go Tenpin magazine

Secondly- the timing of the YAC trials and tournament, also possibly clashing with the Sheffield singles.

Thirdly- the lack of response from Head office especially for replacement cards and on other occasions Lancs bowlers being registered as Cheshire bowlers because of post codes.

Fourthly- how do other counties handle trial dates?

Finally- why are there very few Team England tournaments in the North of England.

It was with sadness that MG had to inform the meeting of the recent death of Gwyneth Lamprell.  She was known and liked by many who had bowled with her and against her in the NW Fives and County teams for her forthrightness and humour.  All at the meeting send their condolences to Trevor and the family during this difficult time.

It was also with concern that the meeting was informed of the recent illness of Bill Wadsworth.  We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him on the lanes again soon

15.0      Next meeting.

MG expressed his wish to hold the next meeting in the south west part of the county which was the only area where a quarterly meeting had not been held.  However nobody at the meeting could recommend a suitable bowl with a suitable room now that Liverpool Edge Lane was being refurbished .

It was therefore agreed as a result of Jenny Lloyds kind offer to organise it, because the centre proposed is the same company as Morecambe to hold the next meeting at the new bowl opening shortly in ACCRINGTON (a few comments were heard around the room of “Where’s that?) at 7.00pm on Saturday 21st September 2002.

MG again thanked everybody for giving up their Saturday to attend and support their local BTBA and hoped it bode well for the future of Lancashire bowling
